COMMON QUESTIONS
Answers to help our customers make money saving decisions
Buying Advice
Before buying a major piece of equipment we suggest you check up on the contractor you are considering. Don't rely on advertising you have heard or the size of the company. Sometimes companies that do large scale advertising are the ones you should be careful of. While some companies spend considerable money on radio, TV and sponsorships, we rely on word of mouth and repeat business.
Maintenance
Heating and cooling systems are usually trouble-free and easy to maintain. Efficient operation is a function of good regular maintenance. No matter what type of furnace you have there are several things you can do to keep your heating and cooling system in top condition. .
The furnace filter should be replaced regularly. To check the filter, take it out and hold it up to the light. If you see more than a dusting, replace it with a new filter of the same type and size regardless of the length of time it has been used. The size of the filter is printed on the edge of the frame. The arrow on the edge of the frame should point to the furnace the direction of the air flow.
Heating 101
Gas Heat
In a gas furnace heat is supplied by burning gas. Burner flames heat up the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger separates flame exhaust from the air you breathe. The blower moves air across the heat exchanger, through the duct system and into the conditioned space. The by-products of combustion pass harmlessly through the venting system to the outdoors.
Heat Exchanger Cracks The heat exchanger can develop cracks or holes and the potential exists for dangerous fumes to mix with indoor air.
According to The American Gas Association (AGA) publication 'Fact Sheet On Heat Exchangers' "Any visible crack or hole discovered is reason for requiring replacement of the heat exchanger or furnace."
The Society of Professional Real Estate Inspectors manual 'Heating Systems Inspection' states: "...the committee consulted with all of the major furnace manufacturers, as well as the American Gas Association (AGA), and The Gas Research Institute (GRI). The consensus of opinion was that THERE IS NO ACCEPTABLE CRACK, OPENING OR DAMAGE IN A FURNACE HEAT EXCHANGER" (capitalization theirs). When you attempt to sell your home a home inspector will likely see the crack and require a furnace replacement.
The typical gas light company's policy is to "Red Tag" and refuse to light the pilot on any furnace with any visible crack or hole.
